Essay: sociology of culture contributions and limitations
Among the benefits that sociology has as a social science, it is a very wide range of research areas, from sociology of work to sociology of education.
One of the areas in which I have been going through the university has interested me the most is the sociology of culture, however, we only have one elective in this area and within the more structural areas it is not so recognized.
In this essay, I will comment broadly on what is the sociology of culture and what are its contributions to the study of society.
The sociology of culture is an area of sociology dedicated to the systematic analysis of culture, usually understood as the set of symbolic codes used by the members of a society, as they manifest themselves socially. In this way, culture is analyzed from the ways of thinking and conceiving the world, the ways of acting, and the material objects that, as a whole, shape the way of life of a group.
Within their contributions we can identify the recognition of culture as a factor that directly or indirectly determines the social and economic aspects of a society. On the other hand, within its limitations it is found that it is not a unified field, rather it is divided between those who defend a sociology of culture and those who defend a cultural sociology, which has led to not always having a clear idea of what does sociology study when it studies culture.
However, I think it is very important to emphasize how the sociology of art has made its way within the rather “structural” guidelines of sociology, such as the class struggle and the structure and the superstructure, positioning the place of culture as relevant aspect of being sociologically investigated.
