Essay: The effect of social media on teens
In recent years, the use of new technologies and social networks, the internet, mobile telephony, video games and television have been installed rapidly in our lives.
Regarding this, there are many who defend the great educational and communication potential of new technologies, however it has also been shown that their excessive or inappropriate use could be bringing serious consequences.
In this essay, I will briefly comment on the consequences that have been identified in the mental health of adolescents as a result of the excessive use and sometimes without adult control of social networks.
The foregoing has been investigated under the name of "addiction without chemical substance", this means that those who possess it are characterized by not being able to control the time they spend on the internet and even sometimes many cannot detach from the screen for more than 3 hours. This situation has affected the mental health of adolescents, among the risks are social isolation, poor school performance and unsatisfactory social relationships. In addition, psychologists have investigated how the excessive use of social networks can produce confusion between the intimate, private and public, this because it allows them to create a fantasy world, create an ideal personal identity, which in consequence could generate many instances of frustration between the "true me" and "the social media me".
As can be seen, new technologies have brought many advances and solutions to modern life, but their interpersonal consequences should not be ignored. Finally, facing the problem of excessive use of social networks, it is recommended to help adolescents to develop adequate self-esteem and good social skills that allow them to develop good interpersonal relationships, also to break connection routines, integrating other activities as priorities for example, dedicating adequate time to having breakfast, doing activities outdoors and spending free time in activities such as reading or crafts.
